Reverse pharmacology of Ayurvedic drugs includes mechanisms of molecular actions
نویسنده
چکیده
Sir, In his article “Beyond reverse pharmacology: Mechanism based screening of Ayurvedic drugs,” Dr. R. D. Lele, the eminent teacher of modern medicine and scholar of Ayurveda, urges us to include advances in biomedical sciences for screening of Ayurvedic drugs.[1,2] However, as he has not cited any of the original articles and references on Reverse Pharmacology (RP),[3-7] it seems that the experimental stage of RP has been overlooked. Here, an attempt is made to correct the impression that molecular screening of Ayurvedic drugs is beyond RP, and indicate which aspects of Ayurveda may truly lie beyond the current state of RP.

Sir Ram Nath Chopra (1882-1973) was a pioneer in the field of experimental pharmacology of indigenous drugs of India. Most of the medicinal plants he studied were in use, in ayurveda, for thousands of years. At the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine, he pioneered a paradigm, a pace and a pattern of research in studying the actions of medicinal plants, which influenced an entire generation of ...

Sir, A recent issue of the Malaria Journal has been dedicated to the research and development of natural products for treatment of malaria. All the articles in the issue are interesting. The article on Reverse Pharmacology (RP) by Willcox et al [1] is of particular interest, which suggested that this transdiscipline of RP has global appeal. The RP path, as Willcox et al have rightly mentioned i...
متن کاملBeyond reverse pharmacology: Mechanism-based screening of Ayurvedic drugs
This paper reviews the pharmacology of Indian medicinal plants, starting with the historical background of European work on the subject beginning as early as the 17th century, and tracing its history through the work of Sen and Bose in the 1930's, and Vakhil's historic 1949 paper on Sarpaghanda. The often crucial role of patient feedback in early discoveries is highlighted, as is the time lag b...
متن کاملNetwork Pharmacology of Ayurveda Formulation Triphala with Special Reference to Anti-Cancer Property.
Network pharmacology is an emerging technique, which integrates systems biology and computational biology to study multi-component and multi-targeted formulations. Ayurveda, the traditional system of Indian medicine, uses intelligent formulations; however, their scientific rationale and mechanisms remain largely unexplored. This paper presents the potential of network pharmacology to understand...
